A portable toilet or mobile toilet is a toilet that can be easily moved around. They can be toilets that can be brought to a site, such as a festival or construction site, for quick sanitation services. Others may be toilets in mobile vehicles, such as boats or caravans. Some are reusable and can be transferred to more sites, others are easy to install but become permanent once in place. A key feature is that most types do not require any pre-existing services on site, such as sewage treatment, but are completely self-contained.
They can be used in a variety of situations, such as urban slums in developing countries, festivals, camping or boats. One well-known portable toilet is the chemical toilet, but other types exist such as urine diverting dehydration toilets, composting toilets, container toilets, bucket toilets, refrigerated toilets, and incineration toilets.
